Hundreds enjoy Kyle Petty Charity Ride

[The Register-Herald, Beckley, W.Va.]

Jul. 18--WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS -- It was a banner day for this resort village Wednesday when the 250 cyclists in the Chick-fil-A Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America zoomed down Main Street to a rousing welcome by an estimated crowd of 4,000 NASCAR fans and 1,200 motorcycles.  The estimates were made by Petty's staff members. "We've had our biggest welcome yet," Petty said. The cyclists came from Lexington, Ky., with stops in Grayson, Ky., and Beckley. "It's the biggest event White Sulphur Springs has had for as long as I can remember," said White Sulphur Springs Police Chief James Hylton, general chairman of the event. "It's boosted our economy and has drawn people to White Sulphur Springs. This gave local people an opportunity to get together and enjoy a fun day," he added.

"The governor told me we had put White Sulphur on the map. Gov. Joe Manchin joined the ride in Beckley.

The charity ride, which raises funds for the Victory Junction Gang Camp, drew motorcyclists from several states in addition to West Virginia.

"We like the weather, the friendly people and the mountain scenery," said Jack Cannon of Greenville, S.C. Cannon was en route to the Freedom Rally at Snowshoe Mountain Resort with his good friend, Billy Meadows, when he stopped at the White Sulphur City Hall to get information on the Kyle Petty Charity Ride.  Cannon's motorcycle, in red, white and blue, was an attention-getter. The back of the Harley-Davidson was decorated with an American eagle and a state-of-the-art sign, "In Memory of Our Fallen Heroes, 9-11-01."

"We've been members of the West Virginia State Harley Owners Group for eight years," Cannon pointed out.

"It was one of the nicest rides I've been on. The roads were so good," Rose Hinkle said in discussing her trip from Marlinton.

Business owners also gave a thumbs-up to the charity ride which boosted their business. "We saw about 30 percent increase in our daily sales, including gasoline," said Myron Vaughan, owner of Vaughan's Exxon. "Our Quizno's did 50 percent more business then it generally does," Vaughan said. "And people got to see our town." "We had a good day," said Joyce Vaughan, owner of The Diner with her husband, Waitman. "A lot of people liked our homemade milkshakes and banana splits."

The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America was $6,530 richer following its visit to White Sulphur Springs.

Giving the fundraiser a boost was a silent auction of a Kyle Petty flag which went to Steve Clendenen of Caldwell. The flag was signed by all the dignitaries and city officials who took part in the opening ceremony.  A second identical flag was kept by the city, which sponsored the charity ride.

Motorcycles lined the circle at The Greenbrier with members of the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America spending the night at the resort.

Their dinner was provided by the Seminole Tribe of Florida and was prepared by Greenbrier chefs.

The Chick-fil-A Charity Ride Across America's next destination is Charlotte, N.C., with plans to visit children at the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman, Petty's hometown.  According to Hylton, plans are to stage another motorcycle festival in White Sulphur in 2009.

Motorcycle Festival, Kyle Petty Charity Ride coming July 16

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — The Spa City is gearing up for a Motorcycle Festival and the Chick-fil-A Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America set for July 16.  White Sulphur Springs is sponsoring the event with Chief of Police James Hylton as the general chairman.  “We’re expecting approximately 1,000 motorcycles. There will be 250 in the charity ride,” Hylton said.  “We have room to park all of them on Main Street,” Hylton added.

Kyle Petty and his wife, Pattie, will be joined at the event by his father, Richard Petty and wife, Linda; NASCAR legend Harry Gant, football great Herschel Walker and swimsuit/supermodel Niki Taylor.  Presentations will be made to the Pettys, Gant, Walker and Taylor at a ceremony at Old White Motors on Main Street.   Bishop Jamie Estep of the Neola Church of God also will bless the motorcycle riders as well as those attending the event.

The schedule is jammed-packed for the festival which will begin at noon with a poker run at Old White Motors.  A motorcycle show is set for 3 p.m. at Midland Trail Park while the Kyle Petty Motorcycle Parade will begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The parade and other activities, including food booths, will be on Main Street.  There is a $5 entry fee for the motorcycle show; all makes of cycles are eligible to compete, and trophies will be presented. Following the parade, Richard Hefner and the Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys will provide free entertainment.  “The Kyle Petty merchandise trailer will be set up,” said Hylton. “They don’t do this at every stop,” he added.  “We will have custom motorcycles, all in the $80,000 price range, on display,” Hylton promised.

Hylton stresses that the Motorcycle Festival and Kyle Petty Charity Run is a community endeavor.  “We have approximately 16 different committees that have helped set up this event,” said Hylton. The committees range from staging and cycle parking to first aid, security and fundraisers, he added.  A number of organizations are assisting with the endeavor including Main Street White Sulphur Springs, the White Sulphur Springs Lions Club and members from the Greenbrier, Mercer, Nicholas, Fayette and Alleghany (Va.) chapters of the Christian Motorcyclist Association, he said.

“We will have a 50/50 cash drawing and there will be numerous drawings throughout the day,” explained Hylton. Tickets for the drawing will go for $1 each and will be available for all festival-goers, he said.  “All proceeds will go to the Victory Junction Gang Camp,” said Hylton. The children’s camp was started by Kyle and Pattie Petty in honor of their son, Adam, who was killed in May 2000, in a practice run for the Busch Grand National race in New Hampshire. The camp’s goal is to enrich the lives of children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses.

The 2008 Chick-fil-A Kyle Petty Charity Run Across America began in Traverse, Mich., and will end in Savannah, Ga.  “We hope everyone will come out and join the fun,” said Hylton. “This is one of the best things that has happened to our community in a long time,” he added.
